that is what they tell us

 they tell us in school

a lot of things. but why

does one plus one equal two?

Why doesn't it equal three?

or five or seven or 25.3405?

Who says that one plus one equals two

they do. But who is they? Your teachers

but who told them? Their teachers?

And who told them? On and on.

But who told the first person?

Did that person make it up?

What if they said that one plus one

equals 3.456405 and a half?

And then he told someone,

and they told someone

and what if one of those someones

told someone else that one plus one

equals two not 3.456405 and a half

and then they told someone

and that someone told someone

on and on and on till everybody

says that one plus one equals 2

but here is what I think

I think that one plus one equals blue

one plus one equals rainbows

one plus one equals music

one plus one equals dragons and stars

clouds and flowers, purple horses,

ribbons and glue, pickles and rulers,

winter hats and kumquats, black oceans,

clocks that tick backwards and left shoes.
